Zucci Hairdressing has been operating in Melbourne for almost 40 years and was Australia's first Aveda Lifestyle Salon. We asked Rocco Petrucci, Zucci’s Director and Founder, to share the inside scoop on this Aveda Salon to celebrate their outstanding achievements and commitment to the Australian hair industry.
Please share a summary of your salon and what makes it so unique.
Zucci is a trusted brand for so many people. Our ethos, "Uniquely you", talks to each individual about who they are and their wants and wishes! Our attention to detail, from how we care for our guests to how we run our business, has enabled us to continue to develop. Many guests have been with us for 10 – 20 – 30, and 40 years. This is what makes us special.
When did you open your first salon?
Zucci opened in 1984 (About to celebrate our 40th birthday). We have grown over this period, now having 3 salons and employing 30 people.
What is the most rewarding part of owning a hair salon?
There are so many rewarding aspects to owning a salon. 1. Caring for people and developing long-term relationships 2. Training our staff to be the best they can be 3. Providing career paths for team members 4. Growing a business to be an industry leader 5. Competing in industry awards and presenting to my peers 6. Being in a creative industry with a sustainable focus
Why did you become a hairdresser, and what inspires you?
Hairdressing was suggested to me by an aunt. I moved away from my family home in country Victoria at the age of 16 to pursue hairdressing. "You don't know what you don't know", hairdressing was my calling! I loved it, and I was really good at it.
What are some of your most significant accomplishments?
Accomplishments come in many forms. Having great people around you, for example, is one. Having the vision and determination to achieve a goal is another; I get the most pleasure from seeing the people whom I work with succeed in what they do.
What hair trends do you see emerging?
Hairdressing is currently in a soft colouring stage. We have been achieving an array of natural highlights using a variety of techniques over the past fashion cycle. I see a move towards more robust, vibrant, bolder colours over the coming seasons. Fashion always moves in cycles.
What are some of the most popular retail products that guests purchase over and over again?
We love Nutriplenish and Botanical Repair home haircare products. We do quite a few curly-haired guests at Zucci. Be Curly is a real winner with this group of guests; we can't wait for the re-release of this range. I also can't go past Scalp Solutions; it has such a great range and has struck a chord with individuals who want to care for their scalps.
Do you have any advice for aspiring stylists or salon owners?
Do what you love! Be focused on the little things that will set you apart from the masses.
