Get a head start on hair colour and cut trends for 2019

Pun intended.

Dreaming of a new beauty look to match your fresh, optimistic 2019 outlook? You’re not alone. Change is good, and no one knows the power of a great new colour or cut (or both!) quite like Aveda Artists. We asked Global Artistic Directors for Hair Colour and Hair Cutting Ian Michael Black and Ricardo Dinis, along with Fourteenjay salon co-owner and master colourist David Adams for a little insight into their top hair colour and cut trends for the year to come. Spoiler alert: You might want to go blonde and cut your hair after reading this, so find an Aveda salon near you to book an appointment.

HAIR COLOUR
Both Ian Michael Black and David Adams are feeling warm for 2019 — warm-toned hair colours, that is. It’s all about golden, bronzed brunettes and pearl-toned blondes for Ian, who says, “In 2019, we’ll see blondes go deeper in dimensional pearl shades, embracing a more neutral look with violet undertones. We’ll see more brunettes brightening up their shades with rich, golden warmth. This is perfect for those that want more brightness but don’t want to go too light.”

Another colour trend Ian is loving: Pantone’s colour of the Year, Living Coral. “It translates beautifully to hair. It is perfect for those that want to embrace being a redhead, but with soft, warm, feminine undertones. It’s very inviting and light-hearted.”

David is also ready to warm things up in the salon chair. “We have already noticed a lot of warmer colours being embraced by our guests, which across the colour spectrum make the hair look healthy and shiny,” he says of Fourteenjay’s clientele. “Reds may be as subtle or bold as the heart desires; we’ll see reds travel across the spectrum with hints of violet, pure red and orange. On the darker levels, colours such as red velvet create a rich elegance, and on the lighter levels, colours like turmeric add vibrancy.”

HAIR CUTS
When it comes to your cut, there’s only one person to ask for advice: the one and only Ricardo Dinis. “In 2019, haircuts will be very diverse and all about personalisation – cut with the individual in mind. The haircut should feel personal and that it represents you,” he says.

Ricardo is the undisputed king of the short cut, so it comes as no surprise that he’s feeling cropped cuts for the New Year. “The bob will continue to be popular as a go-to haircut for women looking for a change,” he says. “Some key bob trends will be centre partings, unkept and wavy, tucked or untucked behind the ear, and short curly bobs. We will also see slicked-back, “wet look” bobs featuring low side parts tucked behind the ears with ends flicked out.”

One of Ricardo’s favourite 2019 cut trends also incorporates colour. “For short hair trends, cropped pastel coloured haircuts will take the spotlight – think an ‘80s or punk vibe.”
